2016年，全球总共迎来了12.35亿人次国际过夜旅客，这一积极结果由来自亚洲市场的旅客增长拉动。
根据世界旅游组织（UNWTO）最新发布的全年数据显示，2016年全球旅客到达人次增长了3.9%，与2015年相比增长了4600万人次。
这一增长由亚太地区旅客增长拉动，亚太旅客同比增长8%，即2400万，2016年全年共迎来了3.03亿人次。这表示，亚洲的旅游目的地目前占比全球旅客约四分之一。
非洲（＋8%至5.8千万）的旅游业也在两年的衰退之后迎来了新的反弹，不过美洲（＋4%至2.01亿）和欧洲（＋2%至6.01亿）的旅游业却增速放缓。中东的不安局势也让旅游业也让前去旅游的人数减少。
世界旅游组织总秘书Taleb Rafai表示，“旅游业近年来展现了强大的能量和复苏的潜能，虽然面临着许多来自安全和安保问题的挑战。然而，全球旅游业的蓬勃发展依旧在为各个社群不断创造着新的工作机会。”
