Singapore’s Changi Airport experienced a strong year in 2016, handling record numbers of passengers and flights.

According to official data released this week, a total of 58.7 million passengers passed through Changi in 2016, up 5.9% from last year’s record total, while aircraft movements increased 4.1% to 360,490.

Changi welcomed two new passenger airlines (West Air and Fiji Airways) last year, while United Airlines and Singapore Airlines both commenced non-stop flights to San Francisco. Eight other new city links were established during the year, to Amritsar, Jaipur, Urumqi, Canberra, Wellington, Nadi, Sapporo and Dusseldorf.

And Changi Airport Group’s CEO, Lee Seow Hiang, said he was positive for the year ahead.

“Despite a backdrop of economic and socio-political uncertainties, we maintain a positive outlook for the year ahead. We see opportunities in emerging markets within Africa and Eastern Europe. At the same time, we will continue to grow our long haul routes to Western Europe, and strengthen our connectivity within the region to secondary cities in South East Asia, China and India,” Lee said.

There was little change in the top 10 list of Changi Airport’s busiest routes for the year, with Jakarta remaining top. Kuala Lumpur moved up to second, swapping places with Bangkok. Among Changi’s top 20 city links, Guangzhou was the fastest growing (+21%), with Melbourne, Penang and Seoul also achieving double-digit growth.

Changi Airport’s top five country markets in 2016 were Indonesia, Malaysia, China, Thailand and Australia.
