Family Holiday Association’s annual Seaside Walk Week returns

Jill Sayles

- June 26, 2017

Seaside Walk Week is the Family Holiday Association’s annual week of walks encouraging the nation to explore the Great British coastline with family and friends from Saturday 22 July to Sunday 30 July.

The charity is holding five official events across three locations: Scarborough, London and North Cornwall.

Scarborough
The launch weekend is taking place in Scarborough with walks on Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 July. Local experts from Hidden Horizons will lead the walks, run a rock-pooling session, point out dinosaur footprints and share fascinating facts about the local history, geology and wildlife, all lasting approximately two hours. The walks are part of the Scarborough Seafest programme celebrating the Yorkshire Coast’s Maritime Heritage and offering walkers the chance to enjoy live cookery demonstrations from celebrated Yorkshire chefs, street theatre acts, helicopter displays, music and food. Also included is an exclusive out-of-hours access to Scarborough SEALIFE Sanctuary for all participants after the walk has finished.

Thames Treasure Trail
The Thames Treasure Trail is the perfect event for those who work or live in London taking place on Wednesday 26 and Thursday 27 July after working hours. Walkers can discover parts of the Thames they never knew existed during a fun evening of local history, quizzing and socialising with colleagues and fellow walkers. With clues and questions from the British Guild of Tourist Guides (Blue Badge Guides), the trail will take about 90 minutes to complete starting at Monument and ending with drinks and prize-giving at a pub near Blackfriars station.

North Cornwall
The walk will take place in North Cornwall on Sunday 30 July hosted by Mother’s Ivey Bay Holiday Park and guided by rangers from the National Trust who will lead walkers around the stunning stretch of coast, Trevose Head. They will explain the history, wildlife and habitats of this beautiful area. The walk is ideal for families of all ages with a shorter walk of approximately 40 minutes and a longer walk lasting approximately 1 hour 30 minutes. Walkers are invited back to Mother Ivey’s Bay Holiday Park after the walk for refreshments from Wadebridge Foodbank, a BBQ on the beach and sandcastle competition.

The funds raised from Seaside Walk Week enable the Family Holiday Association to provide children and their families with a short break or day trip to the British seaside.
