As veganism is on the rise and many find it hard to find adequate vegan options while traveling, Japan Airlines (JAL) is ensuring their passengers with dietary restrictions are taken care of with their wide selection of vegetarian and vegan offerings in flight.
As part of Japan Airlines’ Special Inflight Meals menu, passengers are served a full meal service shortly after take-off or prior to arriving at their destination. The full meal service consists of an appetizer, an entrée and a dessert as a course meal or on a meal tray, depending on the route and flight class. Passengers may also be served refreshments, depending on the time of departure, to satiate any hunger during their journey.
While dietary restrictions are shifting and vegan and vegetarian options are becoming more robust, Japan Airlines is listening to their passengers for feedback and are implementing changes with customer satisfaction in mind:
“We understand the need to clearly detail the contents of our special menus at the time of pre-order so that we can effectively meet passenger expectations while onboard,” said a JAL representative from the Customer Experience Division, Product & Services Development Department. “Feedback from our customers is important in helping us continually expand our vegan menu offerings to improve quality and customer satisfaction.”
By offering a wide selection of vegetarian and vegan inflight meals, Japan Airlines hopes to provide all its passengers with a comfortable and enjoyable travel experience.
There are seven vegetarian and vegan Special Inflight Meals options, including lacto-vegetarian meals and meals for religious vegetarianism, to accommodate every type of traveler. The selections are as follows:
- Vegetarian Hindu Meal – A spicy, Asian-style lacto-vegetarian meal that does not contain meat, fish, eggs, lard, gelatin, or other animal-based ingredients.
- Vegetarian Jain Meal – In accordance with the Jain doctrine, this lacto-vegetarian meal is void of dairy products and root vegetables.
- Vegan Meal– This meal does not contain any meat, fish, eggs or dairy products.
- Vegetarian Meal– This meal does contain eggs and/or dairy products, but no fish or meat products.
- Vegetarian Raw Meal– Consisting mainly of raw fruits and vegetables, this meal contains no highly processed foods, additives, or preservatives.
- Vegetarian Oriental Meal– Centering Chinese-style flavor, this meal contains no eggs, dairy, or other animal-derived products.
How to Order 
All vegetarian and vegan meals must be pre-ordered at least 25 hours before a flight’s departure (28 hours for Kona to Narita route on JL779) on Japan Airlines’ website. Special meal requests can also be made through the airline’s customer service center.
