The Vietnamese low-cost airline Vietjet inaugurated its routes to Australia on April 13 with a flight from Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City to Kingsford Smith International Airport in Sydney.

There will now be six weekly return flights to Vietnam from Australia’s Sydney and Melbourne airports, with services from Brisbane Airport beginning in June 2023.

Vietjet operates flights from Sydney to Ho Chi Minh City every Monday, Thursday, and Saturday, departing at 10:15 am and arriving at 4:30 pm (local time). Flights from Ho Chi Minh City to Sydney will depart on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays at 7:30 pm and arrive in Sydney at 7:20 am local time.

Flights between Melbourne and Ho Chi Minh City began on April 9 and will run every Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday.

The flights last around nine hours and are operated by Vietjet’s Airbus A330 fleet.

VietJet joins Vietnam Airlines, Jetstar, and Vietnam’s newest airline, Bamboo Airlines, in operating direct flights from Melbourne to Ho Chi Minh City.

The debut flight of Vietjet was also a watershed moment for Sydney Airport.

“For the first time in our 103-year history, we have 50 airlines operating through the airport at the same time,” the airport said on Twitter.

Vietjet’s first flight to Sydney is a significant milestone for the airline. It will give the Australian-Vietnamese trading relationship a considerable boost. With the potential of providing Australians with a new alternative to seeing Vietnam and other Asian destinations, Vietjet is positioned to significantly contribute to the economic and tourism growth of Vietnam, Australia, and New South Wales in the coming years.
