Ultra-lux cruisers Seabourn, the Seattle based subsidiary of Carnival Corporation held a rather glam naming ceremony for new ship the Seabourn Ovation in baroque harbour town, and current ‘European Capital of Culture’, Valletta in Malta at the end of last week.
The ceremony featured a live performance from famous British actress and singer Elaine Paige OBE (below) in her role as the Seabourn Ovation’s godmother, who completed her duties with the traditional blessing of good luck before releasing a bottle of champagne; which was broken against the ship in the customary fashion.
Another musical highlight of the evening was the first public rendition of Sir Tim Rice’s ‘We Sail to See the Lives of Others’ – which included a full orchestra on the Pool deck — a composition specially commissioned by the company to act Seabourn’s new anthem. The evening closed with a colourful firework display over the Maltese capital.
Speaking at the event Richard Meadows, president of Seabourn said: “The launch of Seabourn Ovation brings us to a new era for Seabourn where we further reinforce our position as the newest, most consistent fleet in the ultra-luxury cruise category. The ship is another major step forward in the growth of Seabourn and an opportunity for us to provide guests with the finest luxury travel experience available at sea today. Like her sisters in our fleet, Seabourn Ovation is such a beautiful ship, and I know that guests and cruise industry observers are going to be very impressed from the moment they step on board.”

As the fifth ultra-luxury vessel to be added to Seabourn’s inventory, the 600 capacity Ovation, has been designed with an extra deck (like its sister ship the Seabourn Encore) and features all oceanfront suites with private verandas. And will make a worthy addition to the Seabourn fleet, claimed by the company to be the youngest collection of ultra-luxury in the industry.
