Bangladesh welcomes first ever international cruise ship

Bangladesh welcomes first ever international cruise ship

Silversea made history recently by operating the first ever port call to Bangladesh by an international cruise line.

The luxury cruise line’s Silver Discoverer expedition ship visited Maheshkhali Island, which lies close to Cox’s Bazar in southeast Bangladesh, where passengers were greeted by a fleet of motorised rickshaws and a group of local school children performing a traditional song and dance.

The call formed part of a three-day stopover in Bangladesh during a 14-day voyage from Colombo to Kolkata. The ship’s 95 passengers were able to head ashore and visit attractions including Hiron Point, Charaputia, Harbaria, Kokilmon, and the UNESO World Heritage-listed Sundarbans mangrove forest.

“This is a major milestone in Silversea’s history that underscores our commitment to exploring some of the world’s most remote and secluded regions,” said Conrad Combrink, Silversea’s global head of expedition planning & strategic development.

“Our inaugural call in Bangladesh is just one example of the many once-in-a-lifetime adventures that can be enjoyed aboard our expedition ships, which sail to virtually every fascinating corner of the globe.”

Silversea’s four expedition ships, which range from 50 to 128 rooms, are designed to access remote destinations such as Maheshkhali Island. They also feature fleets of Zodiac boats to allow passengers to explore even harder-to-reach coastal regions.

Silversea has included Bangladesh in two itineraries this season: one from Colombo to Kolkata and another from Kolkata to Thailand via Myanmar.
