Budapest Airport’s expansion with Wizz Air for S24 – two further based aircraft, six new routes and increased frequencies

Budapest Airport has announced the significant basing of two new aircraft and the addition of six new year-round routes with Wizz Air, signalling a commitment to growth at the airport. Set to commence this June, the airline’s expanded route map of 67 destinations from the Hungarian gateway will further enhance connectivity and provide travellers with more options to explore popular destinations across Europe this summer. The new capacity means almost 700,000 extra two-way seats from this summer, resulting in a 13% growth from S23.

The ultra-low-cost carrier’s (ULCC) new routes will be: Brasov – three times weekly: filling a white spot on Budapest’s route map, this service will be an excellent gateway to the Transylvanian region, seeing Wizz Air operate three routes to Romania from Budapest this summer.

Brussels – five times weekly: catering to the growing demand between the two vibrant European cities, Wizz Air will strengthen the connectivity between Hungary and Belgium and open up opportunities for business and tourism.

Bucharest – daily: this high frequency connection between the capitals joins Wizz Air’s established Romanian link to Tirgu Mures. Stuttgart – five times weekly: varying schedules will give travellers the chance to discover the automotive and cultural hub of Germany, joining the carrier’s connections to Berlin Brandenburg, Cologne, and Dortmund.

Valencia – three times weekly: this additional Spanish route becomes another new destination from Budapest and will see Wizz Air offer seven destinations to the popular Mediterranean country. Yerevan – twice-weekly: a new destination and country on Budapest’s route map, allowing passengers to explore the cultural richness and historical charm of the capital of Armenia.

The ULCC has also confirmed frequency increases on the following services:

Milan Malpensa – 18 times weekly (from 12 times weekly)

Rome – double-daily (from 12 times weekly)

Basel – nine times weekly (from daily)

Athens – daily (from four times weekly)

Madrid – daily (from four times weekly)

Malta – five times weekly (from three times weekly)

Nice – five times weekly (from four times weekly)

Alicante – five times weekly (from four times weekly)

Glasgow – three times weekly (from twice-weekly)

Thessaloniki – three times weekly (from twice-weekly)

Commenting on the announcement, Balázs Bogáts, CCO, Budapest Airport says: “We are excited about Wizz Air’s expansion at Budapest Airport, which is testimony to the attractiveness of our airport and the collaborative spirit we uphold with our airline partners. Despite Wizz Air’s recent industry challenges and the prediction of network-wide flat growth, our airport is seen as a key player in development plans and with two new based aircraft, this is not only reinforced but also brings novel route options and increased frequency for our passengers.” Bogáts adds: “Our new routes with Wizz Air further solidify our commitment to provide our passengers with an array of travel options. These destinations will cater to a diverse range of interests, and we look forward to welcoming both leisure and business travellers on these fantastic new routes.”
