Hotel construction in China could start to accelerate again in the coming years, new data has revealed.
China has the Asia Pacific region’s largest hotel pipeline, but it has been shrinking recently. According to a new report from Lodging Econometrics however, the coming years are likely to see the pace of development pick up again.
There are currently 1,722 hotel projects under construction across China, comprising 360,379 rooms, which marks a 4% decline compared to this time last year (in terms of projects).
But there are also 323 new projects comprising 72,323 rooms set to get underway in the next 12 months, which marks a 10% year-on-year increase, and the number of projects in the early planning stages has increased 8% to 396, comprising 101,583 rooms.
Marriott International, IHG and Hilton Worldwide were found to be the chains with the largest Chinese pipelines, while the largest individual brands are Sheraton, Holiday Inn and Hilton Hotels.
Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Sanya and Suzhou are the destinations with the strongest development.
