Globally acclaimed and award-winning wellness destination, Chiva-Som in Hua Hin, Thailand, has received a Gold Certification from Travelife for its exemplary commitment to sustainable practices and environmental conservation, community engagement, and responsible tourism.
Further demonstrating its unwavering dedication to sustainability, Chiva-Som was also the winner of the “Sustainable & Operational Management” category at the recent 10th edition of the Global Sustainability Leadership Awards 2023, held in Mauritius and conducted by the World Sustainability Congress.
Travelife is a globally recognised sustainability certification system which awards accommodation providers that demonstrate outstanding efforts in environmental and social responsibility, embracing sustainable practices that prioritise the environment. The World Sustainability Congress, based in Mumbai, India, is a not-for-profit organisation that advocates for sustainable leadership around the world.
For Chiva-Som, sustainability is not merely a concept, but a guiding force deeply ingrained in its ethos. The resort embodies sustainability principles at every level of operation, having implemented numerous initiatives including water conservation, mangrove plantation, energy efficiency and much more. Guests enjoy a transformative wellness experience knowing that their stay aligns with the highest standards of environmental and social responsibility.
In 2022, Chiva-Som Hua Hin achieved remarkable strides in sustainability, boasting a two percent reduction in electricity consumption and an impressive 38 percent decrease in water usage. These accomplishments were further complemented by significant waste management success, with 73 percent of generated waste diverted from landfills – made possible through staff training in waste separation; the introduction of a woodchipper to manage landscape waste; and food waste composting initiatives.
Notably, these environmental advancements also yielded a dual benefit by providing financial savings to the resort. Despite a nearly 40 percent increase in electricity tariffs by the end of 2022, Chiva-Som managed to reduce its energy costs by USD 15,000.
In addition, Chiva-Som proudly assumes the role of environmental stewardship over Krailart Niwate, the last mangrove ecosystem in Hua Hin, Thailand. This collaborative effort between Chiva-Som, the Hua Hin municipality, and Silpakorn University has raised tremendous awareness on the importance of the mangrove ecosystem within the local community and guests visiting the destination.
The wellness resort actively engages with local communities, fostering meaningful partnerships and supporting initiatives that contribute to socio-economic development and cultural preservation in the region.
Chiva-Som believes in harmonising health and wellness practices with environmental stewardship and these certifications and awards reaffirm its dedication to these principles.
