I write today to honor the incredible disaster response from our industry and to call on every travel and tourism company to also come together to support tourism’s recovery at one of the affected destinations.
I think we feel extra distress at times like this. We join the country in sending our prayers to communities devastated by Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma. But as travel professionals, it’s also personal – we often know and love these destinations. They are home to many and part of our livelihoods.
Yet we give big, too. We’ve seen it all week: deep support for relief organizations; employees giving and employers matching; and creative giving that includes direct support for affected professionals and their families.
Here are 3 ways you can help:
1. GIVE some of your disaster contribution to the recovery of tourism and livelihoods. It’s easy to donate online, with a check, or we can invoice upon your written pledge. You can also involve your staff and partners with matching gifts and a customized co-branded giving portal.
2. LEARN why it’s important for travel to give together and how our investment strategy is tailored for the industry, leveraging all our assets and influence. Check our destination disaster recovery approach, in partnership with our fund partners the Texas Travel Industry Association and the Caribbean Hotel and Travel Association, and keep in mind our donor guidelines on effective disaster giving.
3. SHARE this with your network, and share your stories using #Tourismresponds and to Ellaine.Deeken@tourismcares.org so we can all be inspired and learn from the remarkable giving and relief efforts already happening in so many places.
Thank you, on behalf of the incredible companies and associations that make up the Tourism Cares community. The power of disaster giving is as powerful as the disasters themselves. Working together we can help our destinations and our peers, marshalling the deep care and superpowers of our industry.
