Before I became a travel writer, I was a scriptwriter who loved binge-watching movies and reading screenplays from writers that I looked up to. But now that I’m focused on writing about hotels around the world, I’ve decided to combine two of the things I’m most passionate about.

Below is a list of hotels that were featured in famous flicks.

Timberline Lodge – The Shining

“Heeeeere’s Johnny!” is one of the most popular catchphrases in television history and it’s a line that made Jack Nicholson a true Hollywood icon. The Shining is one of his memorable films and it was shot by Stanley Kubrick at the Timberline Lodge near the peak of Mount Hood in Oregon. Although on the film, it was called The Overlook Hotel, it’s still a popular tourist destination – especially Room 237.

Sandton Hotel de Filosoof – The Fault in Our Stars

The 2014 film drama The Fault in Our Stars was shot at the Hotel de Filosoof in Amsterdam, where the author John Green actually wrote his popular novel on which it’s based on. Ansel Elgort (Augustus) and Shailene Woodley (Hazel) had stayed in this hotel during the duration of the film, but the interior details were filmed at the American Hotel in a different town.

Plaza Hotel – No Country for Old Men

This hotel is where the best villain of all time (in my opinion) Anton Chigurh hunted down the illusive Llewelyn Moss. The Coen brothers renamed it The Eagle Pass Hotel on the film but it’s actually the Plaza Hotel, which is a historical landmark in Las Vegas.

Caesars Palace – The Hangover

Aside from popular sporting events, there are also numerous movies that were filmed at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas such as Iron Man, Dreamgirls, Rain Man, and in 2009, The Hangover. The film was shot all over the place. From the pools to the corridors, to the gambling tables and of course, the infamous rooftop where Doug (Justin Bartha) was found. Sorry, I forgot the spoiler alert.

Beverly Wilshire – Pretty Woman

Beverly Wilshire is another famous hotel that made its way to the big screen. Films like Clueless, Sex and the City: The Movie, and more notably, Pretty Woman featuring Julia Roberts and Richard Gere were all shot here. As a tribute to the film, the hotel offers a Pretty Woman package to its guests. It’s the ultimate luxury package that includes a personal shopping consultation, a chauffeured Rolls-Royce, an ultimate date night, and more. Just don’t expect Richard Gere to drive you around.

Park Hyatt Tokyo – Lost In Translation

Lost In Translation is an Oscar-winning movie from the acclaimed director Sofia Coppola and at the heart of the film is the Park Hyatt Tokyo. It’s a lovely hotel with stunning views of Tokyo and its dazzling neon lights. The Japanese setting is where Bob (Bill Murray) and Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson) started their obscure but romantic relationship.

The Plaza Hotel – Home Alone 2: Lost in New York

This hotel is where Kevin (Macaulay Culkin) stayed when he was separated from his family, once again, in the sequel. It’s also popular for being a hotel-slash-set for famous Hollywood movies like Almost Famous, American Hustle, and The Great Gatsby.
