Heritage Expeditions makes its way to the heart of Antarctica this January

Heritage Expeditions announced that the Antarctic Heritage Trust, the organisation caring for Scott and Shackleton’s Antarctic expedition huts and their artefacts, is its Inspiring Explorers Expedition Partner for a commemorative tenth anniversary expedition into the Ross Sea, the heart of Antarctica, in January 2025.

The partnership sees world leaders in cold climate heritage conservation Antarctic Heritage Trust inviting young Kiwi and Australian explorers with an interest in Antarctic history to apply for a position in its 2025 Inspiring Explorers programme to visit the historic huts for the first time in its history.

Heritage Expeditions commercial director and expedition leader Aaron Russ said: “We are looking forward to sharing this incredibly special, remote part of the world with the lucky young Inspiring Explorers and can’t wait to welcome the Ross Sea’s next generation of custodians and ambassadors on board for an unforgettable voyage of a lifetime into the heart of Antarctica.”

Francesca Eathorne, executive director of the Antarctic Heritage Trust, added:  “This is the first time we’ve taken a group of young explorers to visit the historic huts and the opportunity to step inside them will see the Inspiring Explorers intimately connect with the legacy of Antarctica’s early explorers, not just through stories, but by experiencing the very landscapes that challenged and inspired them.”

In the footsteps of legendary explorers

Guests can also join the passionate group of Inspiring Explorers selected for Heritage Expeditions’ iconic bucket list voyage In the Wake of Scott & Shackleton

During the 28-day voyage, guests and Inspiring Explorers have the opportunity to step inside the iconic Shackleton and Scott expedition huts and learn of their history and conservation from Heritage Expeditions guide and the Trust’s former Programme Manager Al Fastier who has 18 years of experience in extreme conservation and spent more than 2,000 days in Antarctica.

The voyage also includes the opportunity to walk on the ice with emperor penguins, visit the world’s largest and oldest adélie penguin colony, cruise along the astounding Ross Ice Shelf and enormous icebergs, take in the grandeur of Mt Erebus, and visit New Zealand and Australia’s Subantarctic Islands.
