In Q3, UK records largest number of seats in flights: Cirium

Cirium, the aviation analytics firm, has revealed information on flights from the UK, revealing Q3 has been the busiest quarter so far in 2024 and the busiest quarter ever for the number of seats.

Cirium Data – Q3 lookback

  • In Q3 2024, there were 282,775 flights departing from UK airports, which equates to over 51.24 million seats
  • The number of departing seats from the UK during Q3 of this year was the highest level ever recorded, surpassing peak 2019 levels
  • This is a result of airlines continuing to introduce larger aircraft to their fleet, including on UK routes, and also airlines densifying their aircraft to fit more seats
  • The most popular destination from the UK was Dubai, with 10,508 flights and 1.5 million seats
    • Amsterdam was the second most popular with 9,701 flights and Mallorca, Alicante and Malaga round out the top five destinations
    • The most popular single route was Heathrow to New York’s JFK with 2,019 flights, which equates to over half a million seats
  • easyJet operated the most flights in Q3 with 57,527 flights, British Airways operated the second most flights with 46,296 flights and Ryanair was the third most prolific with 41,099 flights
  • Q3 has been the busiest quarter for flights from the UK so far in 2024
    • In Q1 there were 208,546 flights operated
    • In Q2 there were 264,158 flights operated
  • There are expected to be 236,002 flights operated in Q4 of 2024
