Archipelago International, the Indonesian hotel group, has moved out of Asia for the first time with the signing of its first property in Cuba.

The Jakarta-based company has penned an agreement for the management of the Grand Aston Varadero Resort, a new 438-room property in the resort of Varadero.

The hotel, which is being developed by Grupo de Turismo Gaviota, is expected to open in the final quarter of 2019.

“We are delighted to have been appointed by Gaviota to help develop and manage this exciting new five-star hotel in the wonderful resort neighbourhood of Varadero, which is only a one-hour drive from Havana. We also look forward to working on further projects with the group and bringing our expertise and Asian hospitality concepts to the amazing island of Cuba,” said John Flood, president & CEO of Archipelago International.

Varadero is Cuba’s most popular resort destination. Located on the island’s north coast, it features a 20km beach.
The new property will join Archipelago’s portfolio of Grand Aston hotels in Indonesia, including locations in Bali, Medan and Yogyakarta.
