Korean Air has formed a major new partnership with Delta Air Lines, creating a joint venture to align and expand the two carriers’ trans-Pacific networks.

The memorandum of understanding provides scope for the airlines to coordinate their operations between Asia and the US, including complementary schedules, reciprocal frequent flyer benefits, lounge access and onward connectivity.

“This joint venture will benefit our customers by providing more convenient connection schedules and widen their opportunities in earning mileages,” said Korean Air’s chairman & CEO, Yang Ho Cho. “With this agreement, we will reinforce Incheon airport’s position as a major international hub in Northeast Asia and support the growth of Korea’s aviation industry.”

Delta will expand its Korean operations this summer, with the launch of direct flights between Atlanta and Seoul in June 2017. This will complement Korean Air’s existing service on this route.

Korean Air meanwhile, will continue to expand its US operations with the introduction of a third daily frequency between Seoul and Los Angeles and a second flight between San Francisco and Seoul.

Combined, the two SkyTeam alliance members serve more than 290 destinations in the Americas and more than 80 in Asia.
