Seabourn Honors Wunambal Gaambera Traditional Owners as Godparents of “Seabourn Pursuit” in Historic Ceremony

Seabourn has made a groundbreaking decision that will go down in maritime history. The Wunambal Gaambera Traditional Owners have been proudly named as the godparents of the Seabourn Pursuit, marking the first time a cruise line has bestowed this esteemed role upon Traditional Owners. This decision symbolizes Seabourn’s deep commitment to environmental stewardship, community engagement, and sustainable tourism.

The christening ceremony, scheduled during Seabourn Pursuit’s voyage from June 22 to July 2, 2024, in the Kimberley region of Australia, is more than a celebration. It’s a testament to the transformative power of travel and cultural exchange. “We believe no one can give a better blessing to our ship than the communities we visit,” said Natalya Leahy, president of Seabourn. “This is a special moment that not only honours the ship but also reinforces our dedication to driving sustainable positive change.”

The Wunambal Gaambera people, the Traditional Owners of a significant portion of the Kimberley, including Ngula Jar Island and Yirinni, as well as the freshwater country of Ngauwudu, will bring their blessings of good luck and protection to the Seabourn Pursuit. The term ‘garrangarru,’ meaning a mother or listener, encapsulates their role as godparents, reflecting their nurturing spirit and deep-rooted connection to their land and sea.

In a gesture of lasting partnership, Seabourn will contribute to developing a self-sustaining industry for the Wunambal Gaambera people, supporting authentic art and craft creation. This initiative will enable the Traditional Owners to share their rich Wanjina Wunggurr culture with Seabourn guests through ceremonies, art tours, and storytelling, all while fostering economic opportunities and cultural preservation.

Catherine Goonack, Chairperson of the Wunambal Gaambera Aboriginal Corporation, expressed gratitude for Seabourn’s support, stating, “Seabourn’s contributions will assist us in looking after our land and sea country, strengthening our culture, and creating economic opportunities for our people.”

“It is important we look after our country in the way of our Wanjina Wunggurr law. We are happy when we and our future generations live and work on our healthy Wunambal Gaambera Country. We appreciate Seabourn’s support and look forward to sharing our unique Uunguu Experience with Seabourn and their guests as the garrangarru or Godparents of the Seabourn Pursuit.”

The Wunambal Gaambera’s role as godparents, or garrangarru, to the Seabourn Pursuit is a profound expression of their commitment to preserving their culture and ensuring the well-being of their country for future generations. Seabourn’s support and funding from Tourism Western Australia will bolster the development of tourism facilities on Ngula Jar Island, enabling the Traditional Owners to sustainably live on and manage their land during the tourist season.

Carolyn Turnbull, Managing Director of Tourism Western Australia, lauds this initiative, recognizing its shared values and promise of providing authentic Aboriginal experiences to visitors. “We are proud to support Wunambal Gaambera’s Ngula Jar Island development as we strive to position Western Australia as the leading Australian destination for authentic Aboriginal experiences,” she stated.

The Seabourn Pursuit, an intimate vessel with a private, yacht-like atmosphere, features 132 ocean-front veranda suites, offering travellers an unparalleled luxury experience. With a 24-person Expedition Team at the helm, guests are guaranteed immersive experiences that bring them closer to the world’s most coveted and remote destinations. From curated shore excursions to cultural tours and guided Zodiac cruises, every aspect of the journey is designed to deepen the connection between travellers and the destinations they explore.

As Seabourn Pursuit sets sail, it carries with it the spirit of partnership and the promise of sustainable tourism, ensuring that the beauty and culture of the Kimberley region remain a source of wonder for generations to come.
