SeaDream Yacht Club: Sailing Towards Sustainability

- June 18, 2024

SeaDream Yacht Club has set its compass towards a greener horizon in a world where the tides of change are ever-present. With the recent installation of advanced shore power technology, both SeaDream yachts have taken a bold leap forward, now capable of reducing emissions to zero in ports equipped with shore power facilities. Andreas Brynestad, a visionary at SeaDream Yacht Club, heralds this as a “significant step in our journey to more sustainable cruising.”

The transformation began with SeaDream II last fall and continued with SeaDream I during a recent yard stay at Naval Rocha Yard in Lisbon, Portugal. This pioneering move positions SeaDream Yacht Club as the first luxury cruise line to retrofit its entire fleet with shore power connectivity, a testament to its commitment to environmental stewardship.

A Summer of Discovery

As the Mediterranean sun casts its golden glow, both SeaDream yachts will embark on a summer odyssey through the yachting harbours of the Mediterranean, from the enchanting Greek Isles to the glamorous French and Italian Rivieras. The journey doesn’t end there; the yachts will set course for the Caribbean’s warm embrace for the 2024/25 winter season as the seasons shift.

Brynestad reflects on the responsibility that accompanies visiting the world’s most beautiful destinations, emphasising the collective ambition to inspire sustainable travel among employees, guests, and partners alike.

A New Era of Luxury

The recent drydock of SeaDream I marks the culmination of a full keel-to-mast upgrade, a monumental $10+ million project that has rejuvenated both yachts. The transformation includes modernised suites, staterooms, public areas, and open deck spaces, all while preserving the intimate luxury that SeaDream is known for.

Guests can now revel in enhanced stateroom space and indulge in the newly designed open deck area on Deck 6, complete with hammocks, a golf simulator, plush sun loungers, and couples’ hot tubs offering panoramic views. The marinas have been expanded, boasting the first and only water slide on a cruise ship that elegantly descends from ship to sea.

The spring drydock also saw the upgrade of the panoramic gym, sauna, and the SeaDream Spa—the only Thai-certified spa at sea, enhancing the wellness experience for every traveller.

Impactful Innovations

SeaDream’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond the yachts themselves. The company was the first to introduce a full plant-based menu, offering the widest selection of plant-based alternatives at sea. By sourcing goods locally and minimising food waste, SeaDream significantly reduces its carbon footprint.

In a decisive move, SeaDream banned the use of heavy fuel oil (HFO) in 2013, opting for lighter, less polluting fuel. The company’s yachting itineraries are meticulously planned for slower speeds and lower fuel consumption, further reducing emissions.

The elimination of unnecessary single-use plastic across the fleet showcases SeaDream’s dedication to the environment. Guests are provided with personalised glass bottles, refillable at water stations on the yachts, and organic luxury bath amenities from Elm Organics Norway grace every stateroom and suite.

SeaDream Yacht Club’s voyage towards sustainability is not just a journey—it’s a transformation. As the yachts glide across the seas, they promise a cleaner, brighter future, setting a course for responsible luxury travel that others are sure to follow.

SeaDream Yacht Club was the first luxury cruise line to eliminate unnecessary single-use plastic from its fleet, replacing plastic items with more sustainable options or eliminating single-use items altogether.

All SeaDream guests receive a personalised glass bottle, which can be refilled at water stations across the yachts, significantly reducing the number of plastic water bottles. In addition, biodegradable, organic luxury bath amenities from Elm Organics Norway are available in all staterooms and suites.

All SeaDream Yacht Club voyages include late-night departures, often with overnight stays, aiming to maximise time spent in port for deeper cultural immersion and enhance local value creation for communities and businesses.
