Eighteen pedestrian bridges will be built across the waterways in Shanghai by the end of the year, as the city aims to open up the Huangpu River to residents and tourists.

The Shanghai Daily reported the Shanghai Municipal Engineering Design Institute as saying this week that the projects, which are already under construction, will span creeks and waterways off the Huangpu River.

Designed for sightseeing and general recreation, they will have separate lanes and walking and cycling. One of the bridges will have two levels.

“The bridges are designed in various styles such as cable-stayed, arched or double-layers to be harmonious with the nearby architecture style on the riverbanks,” senior engineer Dai Wei was quoted saying.

The bridges are part of the Shanghai government’s plan to open 45km of uninterrupted pathways along the banks of the Huangpu River by the end of the year.
