Europe’s most sustainable holiday destinations revealed

The study by Bounce analysed European cities on factors such as sustainable hotels, public transport use, air quality and Michelin green star restaurants to reveal the most sustainable travel destinations in Europe.

The most sustainable destination in Europe is Berlin, Germany, with a sustainability score of 6.98. The city of Berlin scores the highest on our list for operating greener ways of commuting, with 84% of residents and tourists choosing to use public transport, walk, or cycle to explore the city. Berlin also leads the way in its green energy performance, using the most nuclear and renewable green energy (2.86%).
Ranking in second place is the Swedish city of Stockholm, with a sustainability score of 6.93. The city is one of Europe’s most environmentally friendly, thanks to investment in sustainable infrastructures, low emissions, and a low air pollution score (24 out of 100).
Zürich is the third most sustainable destination in Europe with a score of 6.56. The largest Swiss city has the lowest light pollution of our top three (114μcd/m2) and has a low carbon footprint (11t CO2). It is also the second-highest city on our list to operate greener ways of commuting (82%).
No UK cities rank in the top 10. However, London comes in 14th place with a sustainability score of 4.71, whilst Manchester ranks 19th with a score of 4.34.
