A problem that many people face when considering a vacation destination is the cost.  Whether you are a student looking to get away for the summer, or parents seeking alone time, the financial aspect of vacationing can seem daunting.  For people who aren’t in a financial situation that allows discretionary spending, day trips become the default substitute for vacations–often called “staycations.”

While these mini vacations can be enjoyable and a nice way to do things you normally would not be able to because of school, parental, or work obligations, everyone secretly (or not-so-secretly) wants to get out and see the world.  This is where cruises come in. Cruises offer the most bang for your buck, with package deals that include lodging, excellent food, and entertainment. Not only is all of this included in one price, but you get to enjoy these luxuries while at sea.  The same satisfaction offered by a land-based getaway can also be achieved on a cruise, only at a better value. This is because cruise lines offer the opportunity to island hop and spend a few hours ashore in unique and beautiful places. For those looking to spend money on a cruise this year, here are three places to consider as destinations.

Caribbean Islands

One of the best experiences one can have is a caribbean cruise vacation to really any of the islands in the region.  From Puerto Rico to Turks and Caicos, these islands offer a one-of-a-kind vacation destination. The sandy white beaches and beautiful turquoise water is reason enough to visit these places, providing you with ample opportunities to enjoy some sunlight as well as time in the water.  However, the Caribbean Islands do more than simply offer clear water and soft sand; while on any of these islands you can try a wide variety of new foods. For example, if you’ve always wanted to try Conch but haven’t had the opportunity, you can do that at Turks and Caicos. Try turning it into ceviche, too–you won’t regret it.  If you are a history buff, or an admirer of century-old, elegant architecture, make sure you visit Old San Juan in Puerto Rico. The district is best appreciated by foot, with five old forts to visit and many unique and festive shops along the way. Overall, the Caribbean Islands are like no other place on earth.

Alaska

This part of the United States probably doesn’t seem like much, but it has been a popular cruise destination for years, attracting millions of people each year to explore the waters of the Inside Passage. The Inside Passage was formed over millions of years by the slow movement of glaciers, stretching from Puget Sound to the Gulf of Alaska.  The size of these glaciers dwarfs even the largest ships and make for breathtaking scenery.  The Inside Passage also contains over 1,000 islands, each lush, green, and thriving with wildlife.  Whales frequently migrate in these waters as well. While docked, make sure you visit Creek Street in Ketchikan to take in all of its charm and historical significance.  Do not underestimate what Alaska has to offer. Though the weather can be quite cold, all of the scenery can be enjoyed from the comfort of your cruise ship.

Australia

Known for its bold personality and abundant wildlife, Australia is a fun and adventurous destination for people seeking a thrill.  With ideal beaches for surfing, as well as snorkeling and scuba diving in the Great Barrier Reef, Australia is very entertaining. If you want a day in the city, Sydney is a great place to go in order to visit some of the country’s most iconic landmarks, such as the Sydney Opera House. This multi-venue performing arts center is a trademark of Australia and definitely worth making the time to visit.  At Port Douglas you can also enjoy an excursion through Daintree National Park. One of the oldest rainforests in the world, Daintree National Park is admire by millions for its biodiversity, wide variety of animal species, and beautifully lush plants.  Australia is home to many different wetlands, forests, grasslands and beaches that really do transport you to a different world.
