We all grew up watching anime and most of us have probably seen the famous Studio Ghilbi like My Neighbour Totoro and Spirited Away or the recent films like Your Name and Weathering with You. For me, I grew up alongside Naruto and once cheered for Shohoku and Karasuno.
Manga and anime is Japan’s biggest contribution to popular culture. Fans have grown to love Japan thru their entertainment, and Tokyo is giving fans to get closer to their beloved fictional worlds and heroes with anime tourism.
For anime fans, Akihabara in Tokyo is probably heaven on earth. However, from 2 February to 23 March, the whole of Tokyo will transform into a gigantic anime exploration site for fans capitalising on the popularity of My Hero Academia worldwide.
Starting 2 February, fans can download the official Tokyo Anime Tourism app and visit popular spots in Tokyo. By doing so, they will be able to get a digital stamp collection featuring their favourite fictional characters. Each digital stamp is equivalent to points that fans can later exchange for original anime goods.
Anime tourism is nothing new. Some anime fans travel to Japan to see real-life set locations. Even I was drawn to explore Enoshima and Kamakura when I travelled to Japan last year that I saw in anime and dramas before.
