In honour of the rich Basque heritage that continues to thrive in Nevada today, Travel Nevada has announced the launch of a brand-new Basque itinerary paired with a mobile exclusive Basque Adventure Challenge. From Basque boarding houses and family-style feasts to folklore and festivals, the Basque Adventure Challenge guides travellers on a journey through unique experiences across northern Nevada, with points of interest in Gardnerville, Reno, Winnemucca, Elko, and Ely.
The Basques (pronounced BASKS) are known for their hearty, welcoming nature, and vibrant culture. Originating from a region on the northern border between Spain and France, they first migrated to Nevada in the 19th century for gold. Later, they brought their sheepherding skills to northern Nevada’s rugged mountainous terrain.
“For over a century, Nevada’s Basque communities have woven a distinctive thread into our cultural fabric,” said Tracie Barnthouse, chief communications officer at Travel Nevada. “We are delighted to offer travellers the opportunity to experience this unique culture that is so deeply rooted in our region and has left a distinct mark on Nevada’s personality.”
Whether indulging in mouth-watering Basque cuisine or enjoying time-honoured traditions first-hand, the Basque itinerary provides visitors with an enriching travel experience.
Key highlights include:
- Feasting on family-style fare at authentic Basque boarding houses
- Exploring Nevada’s rich Basque heritage at museums and historic landmarks
- Discovering Basque tradition at vibrant festivals and events
The Basque Adventure Challenge, available exclusively on mobile until 31 July 2024, is a complimentary digital passport that invites users to explore nearly two dozen Basque restaurants, events, and cultural institutions across northern Nevada. By checking in at a minimum of three locations, users will be entered to win enticing prizes, including dining gift cards, swag bags worth $50 and the ultimate prize of a two-night stay in Elko with a gift card for dining and gas.
