ON THE BRIDGE WITH: Captain Mal Bardsnes, Master of the Navigator of the Seas

Tell us a little bit about yourself and your career highlights to date?
I started my career in the fishing industry, on the coast of British Columbia.  I joined Royal Caribbean in 1997 and worked my way up the ranks on various ships in the fleet.

And where is home? Vancouver

Which ships have you served on? I started on the Nordic Empress over 20 years ago, and worked on several Royal Caribbean ships, including, Legend of the Seas, Vision of the Seas, Rhapsody of the Seas Jewel of the Seas and Majesty of the Seas.  However, my favourite has been Mariner of the Seas, this ship is close to my heart having worked on it for over 6 years.

What’s most challenging things you have to do? Medical evacuations, but weather can be challenging particularly during hurricanes – however, we do everything to make crew and guests safe.

What is the most rewarding thing you do? To see my officers go from 2nd Officer to Staff Captain, to Captain, this makes me very proud.

What’s the most difficult request you have ever had? (He laughs) This interview!

Who’s the most famous passenger to have been on your ship? Erm… it has to be Bobby Arvon from the  1970/80’s TV programme Happy Days

If you had a choice of 3 guests for dinner at the captain’s table, who would they be and why? I’ve a grown up with hockey and am a big NHL fan, so I’d like to hear the insights of Gordie Howe, Bobby Orr and Wayne Gretzky.

Why is RCCL a good company to work for? There is lots of opportunity and the skies the limit. Wherever you start, you can go as far as your aspirations take you. But what I like is the cultural diversity. Some say we work better than the United Nations, this is true because we all get along together.
