Marriott brings virtual reality to meeting space

Marriott International has started allowing meeting planners to visualise their event before they even book, using virtual reality.

The hotel group is harnessing VPViewer, a new mobile technology solution developed by Zebra Design, which will be incorporated into the company’s existing Virtual Planner concept. The VPViewer app will allow event organisers to view 360-degree, 3D views of custom-designed room set-ups in virtual reality.

Using VR headset like Google Cardboard, clients will be able to look around the interior of the hotel’s meeting rooms, to get a realistic view of how their event could look.

“VR was born as a very cool but uncertain technology; now it has become a great sales and marketing tool and an innovative way for customers to plan their events. It offers your customers the unprecedented opportunity to try before they buy,” said Diego Herrera CEO of Zebra Design.

Users without a VR headset will be able to view 360-degree tours of the function rooms using Gyroscope, and there are also 2D floorplan previews. The app also features RFP contact forms allowing clients to submit requests to hotels.

The VR solution will initially be available for selected Marriott hotels in Europe, Africa and the Middle East.
