Passengers at Suvarnabhumi Airport

Passenger traffic at Thailand’s airports continues to climb, with rising demand for travel to and from major hubs all across the country

According to data from Airports of Thailand (AoT), reported by the Bangkok Post, a total of 56.2 million travellers passed through Thailand’s six largest state-operated airports in the first five months of 2017, 7.7% more than the same period last year.

International passenger traffic increased 5.9% to 31.7m and domestic traffic jumped 10.2% to 24.5m in the  January-May period, while aircraft movements increased 5.7% to 346,613.

Bangkok’s two airports, Suvarnabhumi (25.8m) and Don Mueang (15.9m), handled almost three quarters of total traffic in the five-month period, while Phuket (7.3m), Chiang Mai (4.3m), Hat Yai (1.9m) and Chiang Rai (1.0m) all saw rising passenger numbers.

This growth was achieved despite the clampdown on so-called “zero baht” tour groups from China and runway work at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport.
