These Photos Will Leave You Breathless

Recently, the Smithsonian Channel aired a documentary called Americans Underground: Secret City of WWI.  This documentary unveiled the first in-depth look into a secret underground city of WWI soldiers.
Emergency room doctor, National Geographic photographer and explorer, Jeff Gusky was granted exclusive access to these underground cities, stretching up to 45 miles…all now hidden beneath beautiful French farm fields. According to Jeff, not only were these underground cities used for physical refuge, they were a place for soldiers to express their humanity and inner life.

In complete darkness, Jeff took stunning photographs of the artwork and carvings of these soldiers, much of which had been perfectly preserved and hidden away for over a century.

Currently, the Smithsonian’s Air & Space Museum is featuring Jeff’s breathtaking photographs in an exhibit, entitled “Artist Soldiers, Artistic Expression in the First World War”.
