Tokyo, Paris and New York City are the top destinations to ring in 2019 according to Agoda, with more than a third more people opting to get away on New Year’s Eve (NYE).

The new year has begun! The celebrations are over and what’s left are the new year’s resolutions we’re trying to achieve and our many plans for the coming year.

Now, if you’ve had the chance to ogle your phone or watch some TV during NYE, you’ve probably seen the celebrations from key cities around the world — from concerts, parades, and of course, the fireworks in the sky. So, which destinations are the best when it comes to celebrating NYE?

Agoda, one of the world’s fastest-growing OTAs, compiled data of its NYE bookings from 2016, 2017 and 2018. The top three are below:

Tokyo, Japan

A top ten NYE destination for many markets globally and number one for Chinese and Singaporean travellers, Tokyo’s appeal continues with a jam-packed itinerary of concerts, parades and light shows making it the perfect destination to cast off the old and welcome in the New Year.

Paris, France

It’s no wonder Paris, boasting endless themed parties, New Year countdowns at popular landmarks and shows for the whole family, has secured the top spot for NYE travel in Europe. The City of Love is a top ten for their British neighbours as well as travellers from Israel, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

New York, USA

The ball drop at Times Square in New York City is one of the most iconic and star-driven celebrations of NYE in the world, so it comes as no surprise that New York City is the top North American destination for travellers globally and number two for Americans travelling domestically for NYE. The event was first organised by Adolph Ochs, owner of The New York Times. Today, it’s attended by millions yearly with major television networks covering the event.

The top ten destinations by Agoda are Tokyo, Bangkok, Taipei, Seoul, Osaka, Pattaya, Taichung, Hing Kong, Bali and Chiang Mai.
