The beaches, the waves, the gentle scent of frangipani wafting as soon as you landed the Ngurah Rai International Airport will welcome international tourists starting September 11, months after travel ban has been imposed amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Bali Governor Wayan Koster confirmed that the island’s reopening will be gradual. Beginning July 9, the island will be reopened to local tourists.

While the island shut down tourism several regions are still allowed to keep popular beaches such as Canggu Beach and Labuan Sait Beach in Badung regency open to foreign surfers.

The island is praised for how it handled the coronavirus outbreak. Being a popular tourist destination, Bali has reported 1,849 coronavirus infections and 20 deaths so far, while Indonesia as a whole has recorded 64,958 cases and 3,241 deaths since early March.

The island is home to hotels operated by industry leaders such as Marriott International, Wyndham Hotels & Resorts and Hilton Worldwide Holdings. Bali foreign tourist arrivals slump 22% to 1.04 million in the first quarter from a year ago, according to official data. The island received a record 6.2 million foreign tourists last year.
