Delhi’s Metro network has entered the capital’s ancient “Walled City” for the first time, with the launch of the new Heritage Line.

The new line opened on 28 May and features stations at three of the city’s main attractions: Delhi Gate, Jama Masjid and Red Fort. It is an extension of the existing Violet Line which runs between Faridabad and ITO.

It is hoped that the new Heritage Line will help tourists in the Indian capital, whilst also relieving congestion. Connecting to the city’s main historic attractions, it will allow visitors to access these sites without getting stuck in traffic. The three new stations are all underground, so as not to spoil the historic cityscape.

Following the opening of the new line, the Delhi Metro network now stretches 217km and features 162 stations.
