Don Mueang’s capacity will increase to 40m passengers per year

Bangkok’s low-cost carrier hub, Don Mueang International Airport, is set to undergo another phase of expansion, boosting its annual capacity to 40 million passengers per year.

The Bangkok Post reports that plans for the third phase development are expected to be sent to the board of state-run Airports of Thailand (AoT) in November 2017. The project is estimated to cost THB32 billion (US$937m) and could be completed by 2022.

To make way for the new development, the newspaper reports that 11 old buildings will be demolished. These will be replaced by a 100,000m² terminal and other facilities.

In the six months to April 2017, Don Mueang handled 21.7m passengers, up 9% year-on-year. The airport is the home base of several LCCs, including Thai AirAsia, Nok Air and Thai Lion Air.
