Don’t Lose Your Card Abroad: 30% of Banks May Not Send Replacements – A WalletHub Report

Simon Willmore

- May 26, 2017

With summer travel planning heating up, WalletHub followed up its report on 2017’s Best Airlines by examining the best ways to pay for foreign getaways in its 2017 International Travel Credit Card Report. This report compares 69 of the most popular credit cards on the market in terms of 13 key metrics, ranging from the cost of foreign-transaction fees and the convenience of lost luggage insurance to whether you need to notify the issuer before departure.

You can find a handful of highlights below:

  • Capital One, Discover and USAA are the only major issuers that exclusively offer no-foreign-transaction fee credit cards. Getting both a no-foreign fee credit card and a no-foreign fee debit card enables international travelers to minimize the cost of currency conversion.

  • American Express and Capital One are the only issuers that automatically detect when you travel and do not require a notification.

  • 30% of issuers will not automatically send a replacement for a lost or stolen card to customers who are traveling abroad. Another 50% will send a replacement for an average fee of $20.

  • 2017’s best credit card for international travel is the Barclaycard Arrival Plus World Elite MasterCard.
