Haiphong airport awaits new runway

A new runway at the airport in the Vietnamese city of Haiphong is expected to open next month – and the development can’t come soon enough.

The Vietnam News Service (VNS) reports that airlines have been forced to cut flights to Cat Bi International Airport following damage to part of its existing runway. The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV) said that the runway has been “seriously downgraded” after 20 years of use, and it has now taken action to reduce the frequency of flights to and from the airport.

A new runway is being developed however, and is expected to open in July. The CAAV has also urged the operators of Cat Bi International Airport to accelerate the second phase of its expansion project. This follows the opening of a new terminal building at the airport in 2016.

Plans for a second terminal have already been approved, and this is expected to be completed by 2025, boosting the airport’s capacity to approximately 10 million passengers per year.

Haiphong is the third largest city in Vietnam, after Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi.
