Gogo’s new in-flight Wi-Fi can reach speeds of more than 100 mbps

In-flight Wi-Fi will be faster than ever in future, after major provider Gogo revealed that its connectivity has reached a new top speed.

The company has taken the performance of its 2Ku in-flight broadband service to speeds in excess of 100 mbps. This has been achieved through the use of a “next-generation” modem and new satellite, and was trialled onboard Gogo’s own test aircraft.

These speeds will enable passengers to stream video through the internet and live TV through Gogo’s in-flight IPTV product, Gogo TV.

“[Our 2Ku] technology is already delivering industry leading performance. With the new modem and HTS satellites, we are setting a very high bar for the industry,” said Michael Small, president & CEO of Gogo. “We are going to deliver this technology upgrade to our airline partners without needing to take an aircraft out of service, which is incredibly important for their operations.”

The new modem will be start being installed in the second half of 2017. Eventually, it will be available on more than 1,500 2Ku aircraft across 13 airlines.

Gogo works with several major carriers, including American Airlines, Air Canada, British Airways, Delta Air Lines, Hainan Airlines, Japan Airlines, United Airlines, Vietnam Airlines and Virgin Atlantic.
