The Philippine Department of Tourism (COT) announced that it is setting up its 15th tourist rest area (TRA), this time in the town of Patikul, Sulu in Mindanao.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held at the site on Wednesday, 18th September with DOT secretary Christina Frasco leading the rites.

The new TRA will be located near the provincial capitol and is seen as one of the signs that Sulu Province is ready to welcome both local and foreign travellers.

Frasco said of the upcoming facility: “The establishment of a TRA here shows the commitment of the current administration to support the momentum of growth for [the] province.”

An exceptional destination

Frasco said that what makes Sulu unique as a destination is its distinct ability to offer experiences based on its traditions, particularly centuries-old artistry evident in Pis Siyabit weaving, as well as the gastronomic heritage of the indigenous Tausug people.

According to DOT officials, Frasco first visited Sulu in February and saw the province’s readiness for tourism for herself.

At the same time, provincial governor Abdusakur Tan said the TRA would significantly boost Sulu’s tourism potential while preserving the province’s rich cultural and religious heritage.

Necessary amenities

The Patikul TRA, like other TRAs throughout the country, will be equipped with information desks and a souvenir shop where visitors can purchase locally made crafts.

As part of the province’s specific needs and with respect to religious sensitivities, the Patikul TRA will include a musalla, a prayer room for Muslims.

It will also feature sustainable elements such as solar panels and a rainwater catchment system to make it eco-friendly and resource-efficient.
