With the warmer weather finally coming our way and the summer season fast approaching many Brits will be looking to get away and explore new places. For those looking for UK breaks recent data has revealed that Scotland is this summer’s must-visit destination, with beaches, countryside and historical landmarks just some of the attractions the country has to offer travellers.

The country has had an increased interest for tourism, according to survey data from Verdant Leisure, with two in five (40%) respondents choosing Scotland as their most desired UK holiday destination for 2023.

To help those looking north for their next holiday, Francesca Houldsworth, travel expert at Verdant Leisure reveals six of Scotland’s best hidden gems that are a must-see for visitors.

        1. Culzean Castle, Ayrshire & Arran

Francesca said: “On the west coast of Scotland, Culzean Castle is a must-see for architecture fanatics and historians alike. Built in the 16th century, this property has a haunted-past and is rumoured to be home to several paranormal residents. The castle is perched on the top of a cliff so not only boasts spectacular architecture, but stunning views and gardens.”

   2. Isle of Arran

“The Isle of Arran is a hiker’s paradise and one of the most accessible islands of the coast of Scotland. Just £5 can get you on the ferry from Ardrossan, for a day of exploring one of Scotland’s top hiking destinations. Start at Arran Brewery and follow the trail to the top of Goatfell, where you can take in the panoramic views of the Isle of Arran and across to the mainland.”

    3. Tay Forest Park, Perthshire

“Nestled amongst the Highlands of Perthshire is Tay Forest Park, where you can explore woodland trails, lochs and mountain views, spanning for miles across the county. Tales of dragon’s and demons are ample in Tay Forest Park, so let your imagination run wild as you explore this pocket of idyllic countryside.”

  4. Cove Harbour, Scottish Borders

“Beach bums will be more than content when venturing to the quaint fishing village of Cove Harbour. This beachside town is a true hidden gem, only accessible through a tunnel by foot. If you prefer peaceful beach days and gentle strolls in the sea breeze, Cove Harbour is the ultimate day out. Your furry friends will love it!”

  5. Calder Mill Waterfall, Renfrewshire

“One of the most spectacular waterfalls in the country, Calder Mill Waterfall, can be found in the Lochwinnoch scenery. Whether you’re a keen photographer, seeking out a new summer swimming spot or simply enjoy the beauty off a waterfall, Calder Mill is a perfectly peaceful, water retreat.”

   6. Fast Castle, Berwickshire

“If haunted palaces aren’t for you but you’re still a bit of a castle buff, Fast Castle in Berwickshire might be your hidden gem heaven. Built in the 1300’s, the fortress ruins sit atop a cliffside overlooking the east coastline. Its paths are well-suited to those who like a challenging walk, with steep inclines and declines along the route.”

     7. Pease Bay, Dunbar

“Only a stone’s throw away from Edinburgh, Pease Bay is a stretch of sandy beach and sandstone cliffs in the Scottish Borders region. It’s a prime surfing location as well as a Scottish Wildlife Trust Reserve, so offers plenty of exploring for budding surfers, a family day out or a relaxed day on the sand.”
