Authorities in Shanghai have revealed plans to develop a large cultural park on the banks of the Huangpu River.

The Shanghai Daily reports that the 2km² park Expo Culture Park will be set on the river’s east bank and will feature a range of new attractions, including an opera house and indoor botanical gardens.

A city official also revealed that the park will house some of the exhibits from the 2010 World Expo.

“Some pavilions of the 2010 World Expo held in Shanghai will be maintained in the park and part of them will be redesigned and renovated, which will preserve the cultural legacy of the Expo,” Lu Yuexing, director of the Shanghai Greenery & Public Sanitation Bureau, was quoted saying by the newspaper.

The park will be free to enter and authorities are currently inviting design submissions. Construction is expected to start in the third quarter of this year.
