Halloween is on the horizon, as a result, Ubuy has completed an investigation into the most haunted castles in Europe. They did this by examining reviews and descriptions on TripAdvisor and found five cities that are home to a potentially haunted castle.

Speaking on the report, Faizan Khan at Ubuy said:

‘’As Halloween approaches, we decided to put a spin on our castles study and investigate which castles around the world were considered to be the most haunted. Five cities in Europe were found to be home to eerie spirits and spooky goings-on and we expect many thrill-seekers to add these destinations to their winter break bucket lists to explore for themselves. From Dublin to Ghent, there are ghoulish structures to be found in every corner of the continent this Halloween.’’

Now, let’s take a look at five potentially haunted castles around Europe:

Milan, Italy

Firstly, let’s look at the Castello Sforzesco located in Milan, originally built in the 15th century by the then Duke of Milan Francesco Sforza. The castle is arguably one of the most haunted places in the entire city, ‘the Veiled Lady’ is just one of the many apparitions said to inhabit the castle’s grounds.

One TripAdvisor review cited a ‘ ’haunted night tour’’ that lucky visitors could experience, offering more information on the ghostly location and its eerie inhabitants.

Larnaca, Cyprus

Next, the Larnaka Medieval Castle can be found in the Greek city of Larnaca and dates back to the 12th century. This ancient structure has since been used as an open-air theatre, displaying various art pieces but could it be home to a more ghostly surprise?

One visitor on TripAdvisor claimed that the castle had ‘’an air of familiarity’’ before explaining that they believe it was ‘’still haunted by the nearby, in the wall, execution sala, where they hanged convicts, in the last period of British rule.’’

Brno, Czech Republic

The Spilberk Castle, located in Brno features as one of the castles that could be home to evil spirits. The landmark is found on a hilltop in the city and is easily recognisable due to its mix of Gothic and Baroque-style architecture.

The structure is known to have a spooky atmosphere with one visitor claiming ‘’you quickly begin to realise that the people working (in the castle) are both haunted and possessed,’’ with people advised to be wary of the staff and potential ghouls inside the castle.

Ghent, Belgium

Next, the Gravensteen castle situated in the Belgian city of Ghent is one that has an incredibly dark past. Dating back to 1180, Gravensteen was once used as a torture and interrogation site with many prisoners meeting their fate in excruciating ways.

As a result, many claim that the castle could be home to the supernatural, including one TripAdvisor user who labelled the landmark as ‘’a bad Halloween haunted house,’’ before revealing that there is ‘’a grotesque and morbid theme that is displayed throughout the castle.’’

Dublin, Ireland

Lastly, the Drimnagh Castle situated in Dublin is said to be haunted by Eleanor Barnwell, who is searching for her first love. Many tourists have experienced encounters of the supernatural kind.

A review posted on TripAdvisor reported,’ the 15th-century castle dates back to Norman times and is steeped in history and they say… haunted.’’
