Uber rides in Cambodia will have a base fare of US$1

Uber has started trialling a new service in Cambodia, the Phnom Penh Post reports.

A test version of its smartphone app is currently being offered in Phnom Penh, moving the ride-hailing service as step closer to the full launch of services in the country.

A reporter from the Phnom Penh Post took a ride using the trial service and revealed that, according to the receipt from the trip, Uber charges a base fare of US$1 with further charges levied according to the distance and duration of the trip.

Customers will reportedly have the choice of paying the fare in cash or online via the app, which is different from other parts of the world where cash payments to the driver are not accepted.

Uber registered a local subsidiary in Cambodia in May, marking its latest foray into Southeast Asia. Earlier this year the company established operations in Myanmar, and it is also present in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
