Vietnam welcomed 1.04m visitors last month

Vietnam’s tourism industry continues to thrive, as the country welcomed more than one million international visitors in July 2017.

The monthly total of 1.04m arrivals, revealed by the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT), marks a sharp 21.1% jump compared to the same month last year.

July’s total followed a successful first half of the year for Vietnam; the country welcomed a record total of 6.21m international visitors in January to June 2017. The additional 1.04m visitors received in July means that, in the first seven months of the year, Vietnam has now welcomed 7.24m international travellers.

Half (50.4%) of July’s visitors came from just two countries: mainland China (+24.8% to 329,319) and South Korea (+65.5% to 193,569). And arrivals surged from several other Asian source markets, including Hong Kong (+31.3%), Taiwan (+11.4%), Indonesia (+34.0%), Malaysia (+24.5%) and Singapore (+13.3%). In fact Asian visitors accounted for more than three quarters (75.7%) of arrivals to Vietnam in July 2017.

Outside Asia, the US (+10.3% to 56,832) was Vietnam’s largest long-haul source market during the month, followed by Australia (+18.9% to 36,451) and Russia (+20.0% to 34,655).

Vietnam is now well on track to set a new full-year arrivals record in 2017, surpassing the 10.01m visitors it welcomed last year.

Vietnam’s top five source markets (July 2017)

1) China – 329,319
2) South Korea – 193,569
3) Taiwan – 59,800
4) Japan – 58,614
5) USA – 56,832
