As the northern lights begin its peak activity, Visit Norway invites everyone to experience this magical natural light show. A local product designer from Bodø has built special viewing seats for what we believe is The Greatest Light Show on Earth. “These seats are designed so that more people can experience the northern lights just as I have all my life. Now is the time to see this wonder for yourself”, says Sander Kommedahl, local product designer.

The chairs are placed at Ausvika beach, 10 minutes outside of Bodø, and are free to be used by anyone who wants to experience the dance of the northern lights.

“I wanted to create something that not only showcases the beauty of the northern lights but also reflects the warmth and hospitality of our region. These seats are designed to be inviting, and offer the comfort of sitting back, relaxing and enjoying the best view of the Aurora”, says Kommedahl.

Approaching solar maximum

Now is a fantastic time to visit Norway to see the northern lights. The aurora borealis is at its peak activity, which happens about every 11 years, making the displays more frequent and vibrant. This peak period will last until 2026, giving you plenty of opportunities to catch this amazing light show. Northern Norway, with its clear, dark skies and minimal light pollution, is one of the best places to see the northern lights in the world.

“The activity of the sun controls the activity of the northern lights. Right now, the sun is approaching a new solar maximum – when there is more activity than usual”, says Pål Brekke, solar physicist and Head of Space Research at the Norwegian Space Agency.

The Northern Lights Experience

To get the best experience of the northern lights, it’s important to plan your viewing carefully. The northern lights season spans from late September until late March, offering many opportunities to catch this spectacular display. Clear weather is preferable, so check the forecast and choose a night with minimal cloud cover. Move away from streetlights and other sources of light pollution; the darker your surroundings, the better. Ideally, find a spot at least 150 meters away from buildings and look towards the north. Dress warmly, as you’ll be outside for a while, and bring a camera with a good lowlight setting to capture the stunning display. With these tips, you’ll be well-prepared to enjoy the beauty of the northern lights.
