The first of two sea trials for China’s first newly-built, big cruise ship has begun, marking a significant milestone on the path to the ship’s completion and eventual debut.
The first Chinese-built cruise ship, Adora Magic City, has begun sea testing, according to China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC). China hopes to use this ship as a springboard to become a leader in manufacturing large cruise ships.
On 17 July 2023, a significant milestone was reached in constructing China’s first domestically manufactured cruise ship, which will depart from Shanghai in 2024. The vessel has started its first self-propelled sea testing since it was floated out in June 2023.
The large cruise ship, which Adora Cruises Limited will operate, has set sail from Shanghai on a nine-day trip across the sea, every day dedicated to testing and trials.
Adora Magic City was outfitted for six weeks before its initial sea testing. Water ingress alarms, watertight doors, fire safety systems, and other systems necessary for safe and enjoyable ocean travel were tested and certified aboard the ship.
Under the guidance of experts from Italy’s Fincantieri, a leader in the shipbuilding sector, Chinese shipyards have improved their technological competence.
The construction of a second, bigger cruise ship based on the Adora design has already commenced by China State Shipbuilding Corporation. Delivery of this ship is scheduled for 2025 after construction started in August 2022.
China intends to build a cruise ship construction sector on par with Finland, France, Germany, and Italy. China’s ultimate ambition is to be among the world’s top five cruise ship builders. Adora Magic City is an essential milestone towards that goal.
The Adora Magic City is an impressive cruise ship that creates an enchanting “city” at sea by fusing elements from the East and West.
The ship will have a distinct onboard German craft brewery serving original Asian-inspired beers and other popular brews. Guests onboard will also have access to the ocean’s largest duty-free shop facility (created in collaboration with China Duty-Free Group).
This first ship will be a cutting-edge 5G-enabled cruise liner made possible by a partnership with Shanghai Telecom. Adora Magic City travellers should have continuous internet access thanks to 5G technology.
Adora Magic City will have enough entertainment, technology, and luxury to offer Chinese and international guests after it completes its sea testing, receives final touches, and sets sail in 2024.
