Hong Kong air traffic rises in first half of 2017

Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) experienced rising passenger traffic and flight movements in the first half of 2017.

According to the latest data from Hong Kong’s Airport Authority (AA), HKIA handled 35.7 million passengers in January-June 2017, up 1.3% year-on-year, while take-offs and landings rose 0.9% to 206,560.

The traffic growth was driven by rising demand for outbound travel among Hong Kong residents, while routes to and from Japan recorded the most significant growth.

Two new airlines started operating at HKIA recently; Virgin Australia launched five weekly between Hong Kong and Melbourne in July, while Air Japan commenced daily flights to Tokyo’s Narita Airport in June. Also in June, Hong Kong Airlines expanded its Vancouver service.

On a rolling 12-month basis, passenger traffic and flight movements grew 1.1% and 0.5% to 71.0m and 413,345 respectively.
