India welcomed 1.94m visitors in the first two months of 2017

Having welcomed a record number of international visitors last year, India has continued to experience strong growth in the first part of 2017.

According to the latest data from India’s Ministry of Tourism, the country welcomed 1.94 million overseas visitors in January and February 2017, which marks a 14.7% increase compared to the same period last year.

In February 2017 alone, 956,000 international travellers arrived in the country, up 13.0% year-on-year. Bangladesh was India’s top visitor source market during the month, accounting for 17.5% of total arrivals, followed by the UK (12.2%), USA (11.8%), Russia (4.3%) and Canada (4.3%).

France (3.35%), Germany (3.1%), China (3.0%), Sri Lanka (2.9%) and Australia (2.6%) completed the top 10.

And India’s e-tourist visa scheme continues to grow in popularity; in February 2017 the country issued 170,000 e-visas, up 45.2% year-on-year. And just four countries – the UK, US, France and Russia – accounted for more than half of this total.

India welcomed 8.89m international visitors in 2017, 10.7% more than in 2015 and a new all-time-high.
