Indonesia’s tourism sector continued to thrive in January 2017, as the country welcomed more than one million visitors.

According to the latest data from the country’s Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), reported by the Antara news agency, the monthly total of 1.03m international arrivals marked a sharp 26.6% increase compared to the same month last year.

Australia, usually Indonesia’s largest source market, was overtaken by two Asian countries during the month. China contributed 200,197 visitors to Indonesia in January 2017, followed by Singapore with 116,791 visits. Australians only accounted for 100,858 arrivals, just ahead of Malaysia’s 97,370 visitors.

Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport was the main international gateway to Indonesia during the month, accounting for 452,700 arrivals – up 31.7% year-on-year and approximately 44% of the visitor total. Arrivals at Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport jumped 23.3% to 189,200.

Despite this growth, the average occupancy rate of star-rated hotels across Indonesia was just 50.1% in January 2017, up 1.6 percentage points year-on-year.
