Thailand’s Ministry of Tourism and Sports reported a 34 percent year-on-year increase in foreign arrivals to the country for the period running from January to July 21st.

Approximately 19.6 million foreign travellers arrived in the country even before the implementation of the 60-day visa-free stay initiative offered to nationals from 93 countries and territories.

This is three days longer than the 57 days previously allowed for tourists and travelling to Thailand for short business trips.

Relevant changes

Aside from the three-day extension for visa-free stays, the Asian kingdom also introduced the Destination Thailand Visa programme.

Specifically designed for the travel needs of digital nomads, freelancers, and those keen to learn more about Thai culture, the visa enables eligible individuals to stay in the country for up to 180 days. It is also valid for five years.

Both the visa-free extension and the Destination Thailand Visa are part of the Thai government’s drive to hit 40 million foreign arrivals by the end of this year.
