Recent analysis by travel insurance comparison site InsureMyTrip has revealed Morzine in the Portes du Soleil ski area in France is the number one ski resort in the world ahead of the 2023/2024 ski season.
There are an estimated 135 million skiers in the world and as winter enthusiasts eagerly anticipate the snowy season, InsureMyTrip analyzed the top ski resorts around the world for 2024. Whether you’re seeking pristine slopes, abundant snowfall, or a vibrant apres-ski
scene, this study offers a range of options to cater to every skiing preference.
To help narrow down the list, experts at InsureMyTrip analyzed the cost of ski passes, slope length, snowfall, hotel and bar ratings, and TikTok popularity, to create a shortlist of the top 88 skiing and snowboarding destinations in the world. The analysis found Morzine, Les Portes du Soleil – France to be the most desirable winter sports destination in the world, earning an overall score of 9.7 out of 10.
Morzine ranked highly for total ski slope length, boasting 359.6 miles. The slopes are so large, that it would take a fortnight to discover the entire ski area if you skied an average of five hours a day. It was only beaten by Val Thorens, Les 3 Vallées – France with 372 miles.
Morzine also scored highly for ski pass price, where winter sports enthusiasts can expect to pay $72 a day. High hotel and bar ratings (9.34/10 and 4.19/5) also contributed to its overall score.
Ranking second is Kiroro, Japan with an overall score of 8.9 out of 10. The resort scored well for its affordable ski pass, a mere $43 per day – the ninth cheapest in the study overall.The resort also boasts high hotel ratings of 9.06 out of 10.
Guests need not fear a lack of snow at Kiroro – which has plagued many European resorts in recent years – as the resort has averaged 787 inches annually, the highest in the study, making it ideal conditions for the season.
It narrowly missed out on the top spot due to its low total ski slope length (18.6 miles) and bar rating (3.93/5). Val Thorens, Les 3 Vallées – France (8.54), Carezza, Italy (8.26) and Racines-Giovo, Italy (8.16) complete the top five ski resorts for 2024.
Park City is the highest-ranking U.S. ski resort, placing 36th in the study with an overall score of 6.69. Despite being the largest ski resort in America, Park City fell short in categories like ski pass price, where guests can expect to pay $259 a day – the highest in the study overall – and annual snowfall (276 inches). However, it did score highly for its hotel rating (9.41/10) and bar rating (4.31/5).
At the other end of the study, despite being the largest ski resort in China, Yabuli is the least favorable ski resort (3.48/10), due to its ski slope length (21.7 miles), low annual snowfall (39.37 inches), and low bar rating (3.5/10). However, guests can expect to only pay $68 per day for a ski pass, making it one of the most affordable destinations.
Corvigilia in St. Moritz, Switzerland is the second least favorable ski resort, with an overall score of 4.05. This is due to only having 14.26 miles of ski slopes in total and 96.46 inches of annual snowfall.
Idre Fjäll, Sweden (4.32), Vemdalen, Sweden (4.35), and Mammoth Mountain, U.S. (4.38) complete the five least favorable ski resorts. There are many factors to consider when choosing the right spot, so we hope this study can help narrow down the list of possible ski-trip vacation destinations.“
